Philippines MP3 2005: Baguio City
Pastor Joedy Melashenko led a group to the Philippines on the MP3 2005 mission trip. Here is his journal.
|
Sunday, March 13: Packed up all of our “stuff!” 11:00 am, and bade farewell to many at the Union Office. Pastor Levi Payoyo, Mountain Provinces Mission President, came with the van driver to pick us up.
Eight hours later we arrived safely at the mission. Pastor Payoyo and his wife had us over for a light supper. Unpacked and hit the hay by 10:00 pm. It is so nice and cool here at 5,000+ ft elevation. Nothing like the heat and humidity of Manila.

Monday, March 14: Now the work REALLY starts! Had to meet with all of the group coordinators to be certain all of the details are in place! I have to spend several hours tomorrow with the pastors in a training session.
This project has LOTS of possibility. There are lots of scheduling and logistical challenges. We will make it! Am I feeling overwhelmed right now? I’ll let you guess!
Met with Nancy Delos Reyes, the Medical Coordinator. We have LOTS of work planned for the medical teams!
The Children’s Ministry group wants us to accomplish more than we can handle. We will have our groups criss-crossing all over this city.
Spent the afternoon at the Mall purchasing a couple 2000-watt power converters for the DDS team (220 to 110). Also, purchased a couple mattress pads, as the beds here are really HARD! |
Tuesday, March 15: Worked on scheduling and team formation this morning, then I met with all of the pastors for 3 hours.
Finally got the grocery list via the MPM email. So, Judy and Jossie Payoyo (Mission President’s wife) are out shopping. Probably will spend $1000 in groceries tonight! (or more).
The weather here is so nice and cool. It is the most pleasant of any mission project location we have ever been.

Wednesday, March 16: Tied up a bunch of scheduling loose ends this morning. Left for Manila by 11:00 am.
The folk here at Mountain Provinces Mission (MPM) are so accommodating. They are going out of their way for us. Three pastors and the president accompanied me so that there would be at least one MPM rep on each bus on the return.
Got to the Union office by 6:00 p.m. Went to the mall to pick up some supplies that are not available in Baguio.
One of the local families in Manila has a health food store and business. They invited us for supper. It was 9:00 p.m. before we were able to get there. What a meal! They make their own glutton. Watch out Loma Linda Foods! This is the best veggie food I have tasted. We purchased a bunch of it for our cooking crew.
Had one of the girls in the Union office print and collate our Participants Pack (schedules, etc).
Went to the airport at 11:00 p.m. to meet the Woodruffs. What an incredible family! Some of the neatest kids ever! Got them to their hotel by 1:00 a.m.
Headed back to the Union guest room. To bed at 2:00 a.m.

Thursday, March 17: Got up at 5:00 a.m. and headed to the airport to pick up the BIG groups. This is the big day when most of the gang gets here.
The group from Blue Mountain Academy and other parts arrived first at 7:00 a.m. Got them through customs with no problems by 8:30. The group from Canada was delayed three hours because they had to fight a 280 mph head wind. It was so bad they had to make an unscheduled stop in Korea for fuel. They arrived and cleared customs by 11:00 a.m.
We loaded three chartered buses for the eight hour journey and arrived after 7:00 p.m. We got the group assigned to their rooms and by 11:30 they were in bed. |
Friday, March 18: After a super breakfast we got together for our first meeting. About mid-morning, a peace and calm came over me like never before. I looked out and saw this beehive of activity before me. Children's Ministry teams were buzzing. Medical Outfeach teams were planning. Construction Crew even went to work and started "digging in." What an absolutely fantastic group. Again, the kids from Okanagan Academy in BC, Canada, have shown their colors. They are some of the most well-prepared, gifted, energetic kids I have had the privilege of working with. And can they ever sing! Yikes!! We plan to form our version of the "MP3 Tabernacle Choir!" Their staff is great.
The group from Blue Mountain Academy has several youth that were with us in Peru as well as the same four staff members. They are primed and ready to go!
We are blessed to have such awesome kids involved in our program. And the Woodruff family! Wow! Symphony caliber string players. Mom (Krista) is my music coordinator. They are going to be the Pied Pipers of our group, with their music, their juggling, their puppets, etc!
By Friday afternoon most of our Children's Ministry teams were in place as well as our Evangelism teams. Pastor Don Straub is coordinating that massive jigsaw puzzle.
All eight groups went to their first "Cottage Meeting" to lead out.
Since one of the speakers was not here (Brad Thorp – still in Indonesia), I preached at his venue. We had to climb at least 200 steps to get there. It was a KILLER! A group of about 50 adults and 60 children were on hand. Those Children’s Ministry groups are SO important and effective in what we do. It will build. Combined opening attendance in all eight of the “cottage meetings” exceeded 1200.
The kids came back PUMPED! It is so much fun to listen to them describing all of their experiences. Sadly, with 125 people, it is impossible to have all of them sharing their “journey” each evening at worship.
The LLU dental team arrived in Manila at 10:00 a.m. They got through customs easily, even with MANY bags of medicine and dental supplies. The Union picked them up in their bus. They were ready to hit the road by 11:30. |
Sabbath, March 19: Breakfast at 7:00 a.m! Worship at 8:00! Off to the nine locations by 9:00. What a neat group of kids. Many of them were called upon, spare of the moment, to sing, tell stories, etc. Rising to the occasion, they came through every time.
Lunch at 1:00 p.m. Then at 2:00, we sent out all of our kids and adults with local Baguio youth to scatter like leaves of autumn, brochures and flyers promoting the meetings. They came back SO energized. They distributed 6,000 in 1 hour!! They were handing them out 20 at a time to passengers in Jeepnies as they stopped at intersections. It was a sight to see.
Got back at 4:30, in time to heads for the cottage meetings, which will last for three more nights, then the big gathering at Benguet State University, where I will preach the last five nights. There are several banners all over the city with a picture of the Melashenko Trio, and announcing the meetings, with guest speaker (yours truly)!
The DDS and medical teams had a very productive planning strategy today. My old friend from Loma Linda Academy, Walter Hadley, is one of the DDS sponsors. There are 19 LLU DDS students with us for this Medical Outreach!
The food service has been 5-star. These kids are eating a ton of food. Can you imagine how much food it takes to feed 125 people? Ruth Smith, from Okanagan, and her crew are the best ever! |
