Nontoxic cleaners
you can make at home

Protect your home environment. Guard the air you breathe. A recent study by the Environmental Protection Agency reports that the air outside may be up to five times safer to breathe than the air inside your home.

The major culprit may be the synthetic cleaning products you use to keep your home clean. Give your lungs and your family a break. Open up your house and air it out often. And use natural household cleaners instead of synthetic products. You can make your own and save money. Or buy them at your local health food store. There are also mail-order companies that can supply natural cleaning agents.

safe home cleaners you can make yourself

Floor cleaner
Perfect for no-wax floors. Cuts grease and grime.

1 cup vinegar
1/4 cup washing soda
1 tablespoon vegetable-oil-based liquid soap
2 gallons hot water
Combine all ingredients, stirring well to dissolve the washing soda. Mop as usual.

Furniture polish
Make it fresh each time you use it.
  1 lemon
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 teaspoon water
Squeeze joice from the lemon. Mix with remaining ingredients. Apply a thin coat on your wood surface and let it sit for five minutes. Using a soft cloth, buff vigorously to a deep shine.
Oven cleaner
Effective for your most dreaded cleaning task.
  2 tablespoons vegetable-oil-based liquid soap
2 tablespoons borax
Mix the soap and borax in a spray bottle. Fill the bottle with hot water and shake well. Spray on oven and leave for 20 minutes. Scrub off.
All-purpose cleaner/disinfectant
Perfect for everyday use.
  2 tablespoons borax
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 cups hot water
Combine the borax and lemon juice with the water in a spray bottle. Use as you would any commercial all-purpose cleaner.

shopping tips for natural cleaners

1. read labels carefully
Natural products should have recognizable ingredients. If you can't pronounce the ingredient, it's probably not natural.

2. choose biodegradable products
Petroleum-based ingredients don't break down and eventually pollute our water and marine life.

3. push that pump
Buy pump sprays rather than aerosol dispensers that release nitrous oxide and methylene chloride that harm our environment.

4. when it comes to packaging, think simple
Excessive plastic and cardboard packaging overflows in our landfills and creates mountains of waste. Bring your own reusable bag to the grocery store. Recycle as much as possible. Every little bit helps.
