The Quiet Hour is changing lives ... this time with skinny cows

Immeasurable returns

At the base of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya, east Africa, about 1,000 Masai people have become Adventist Christians since 1994. Sintato Adventist Primary School is located in the Loodariak community there. With five teachers and 150 students, you can imagine how busy the faculty are with teaching, mentoring, grading papers, and doing extracurricular activities. The teachers, until 2005, were earning US $12.50 per month in salary. (Not per hour, per month!) Even by their own economic standards, this is sacrificial service.

The Sintato School administrators purchase lean cattle and graze them for six months on their pastures, then sell the cattle at about 100 percent profit. They had only 50 cattle at first, but land enough to graze hundreds. These teachers and their administrators came up with a plan to invest a small amount of money (buying lean cattle) and doubling the investment in six months, when the fattened cattle were sold at market. This has been so successful that other members of their community have emulated the Sintato School’s enterprise. The Sintato School profits pay for teacher salaries and other school expense.

The Quiet Hour was instrumental in jump-starting this Sintato program. In 2005, we wrote e-mails, web site articles, direct mail appeals, and Echoes magazine articles about this “Skinny Cow” project. Because of the enthusiastic response of our readers and supporters, the Sintato School project is fully funded. Thank you! This means that teachers are paid better, more children can be enrolled in Christian school, and other costs of administering the school can be “self-supported” from now on.

The Quiet Hour has taken on a similar project, that of building a Christian school from the ground up, in another Masai region of Kenya. This school is called Naroosura, and you can help to build and equip the school. The area has no school at all, public or private, so it is expected that the children who enroll at the new Naroosura School will be blessed with a Christian education and that they’ll share their knowledge and witness with their parents. It will be a privilege to give to such a wonderful project.

May God bless the beasts and children! And may He bless your heart for trusting Him with your future, by sacrificially giving to the Naroosura School.
