A Personal Testimony
by Pastor Gedeón Herrera Valqui, as told by Carlos Chavez, District Missionary of Chiclayo Santa Victoria
My name is Carlos Adriano Carnero Chávez. I was born in Chiclayo, Perú on August 10, 1963, to Felipe Carnero Bonilla and Susana Chávez Céspedes. I had eight brothers and sisters.
From an early age I liked soccer—it was my favorite sport. At times I missed meals because I was playing! I belonged to the select Buenos Aires Soccer Club of Chiclayo. My waking moments were divided between playing soccer and my elementary/secondary studies. When I finished high school I worked several jobs, and the money I earned I spent at bars where I got drunk; also, I began smoking. The little money I earned I spent on my addictions—which impeded my obtaining any permanent employment.
At 21 years of age I became acquainted with María Paredes Díaz, whom I married after dating for two years. Instead of changing my life, everything got worse. I continued my life of alcohol, parties, cigarettes and bad friends. I realized that what had begun as a game at age 14 had now become my life. This was my lifestyle until I turned 33. During all that time my family suffered because of me. Economic needs were immense, and those who suffered most were our seven children, whom I was unable to feed and dress properly.
However, the day arrived when I came to know the Word of God through the caring of Teylor Cárdenas who talked to me about God, of His love, His pardon and the change that He would make in my life if I only accepted Him. After finishing a Bible course, my wife and I decided to publicly accept Jesus into our lives as our Lord and Savior. Four of our children have followed our example.
All of our family attends church. We shed our vices; our income covers our needs. And we give God all the thanks, because He has saved our home. The Lord changed my life and my children are growing up in the knowledge of Christian standards. God is all-powerful. He lives! He is real! Glory to His mighty name! But there is still much work to be done in Peru. My family and I are helping with the preparations for The Quiet Hour meetings in my town, Chiclayo. We are giving Bible studies, inviting people to the meetings and to our church. We are excited about the meetings and the help that The Quiet Hour will be giving our town.
