To our Quiet Hour family of staff and supporters:
We have been pleasantly surprised that it is not as hot as we had expected. We aren’t saying that it is cool, but compared to Sri Lanka, it is! It hasn’t been necessary to drag out our jackets, but we are really grateful that the weather is pleasant.
Our meetings are going well. We have more children every night. There are so many kids that we are really challenged just to share a story and sing songs. I shared a health talk about smoking last night. I challenged the children to make a commitment not to ever smoke. They all promised they would not smoke. We pray they will remember that promise. We have not been able to do crafts because we are so crowded and don’t have enough help. The children are beautiful and so loving. Last night we had about 35 children from an orphanage – most of the kids were orphaned by the tsunami. We will be visiting their home to take them some gifts.
In the villages the response has been amazing. These are people that in many cases, have never even heard the name of Jesus. Every night the sound systems blast the messages into every home in the village. People are hearing whether they want to or not. From the reports we are hearing from the speakers, the people are responding to the calls to accept Jesus as their Savior. It is an exciting experience to be sharing Jesus in an area that is so steeped in Hinduism.
Bill has been told by the local pastors that they fear to preach in this city because of the evil stronghold here. We believe that God is allowing these people to hear the gospel preached each and every night. Thank you for your prayers. We know the devil isn’t happy about the activity but praise God that He is more powerful.
One of our translators has a prison ministry in a women’s prison. She is in great need of Bibles for these women. Our team members are so generous that some have already donated funds to her to purchase Bibles.
The Bible workers in the villages live on about $25 a month. One of the speakers actually took their Bible worker shopping to provide some clothes and extra food for him.
As always, these trips remind us of how much we have and what a great opportunity for us to share from our resources. We will be visiting another hostel on Wednesday. God is so good. We are well – a few minor ailments, but nothing serious. Keep praying for us.
Jackie, Bill, and Dené
