Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
We arrived safely in Addis Ababa after a rough landing in Paris that had us skidding briefly on the runway.
All our luggage arrived and we are thankful for that. It is very comfortable and cool here at 8700 ft elevation in the city.
Our lodging is quite adequate. We have noticed increase of security just since coming here. The word is that there is a lot of tension right now with the war going on in neighboring Somalia. There are checkpoints set up, and even at the hotel, everyone is having themselves “frisked” and their things looked at. It was quite unnerving for Pansy to see guards with M16’s by their sides. We stated that this is quite common overseas.
We had an excellent orientation and got in on most of it. I even had some good time to share how the Quiet Hour does its evangelism and our expectations for each of the teams and our appreciation for their being there in partnership with Share Him.
Several of the teams left early this morning, and others left this afternoon for their respective sites. Each of the people we talked to are excited about being here and are looking forward with great anticipation to the experience of the meetings.
We were impressed with the outreach of the Central Church. Every day they have people from the outside coming to buy their lunch on the church grounds. It’s like a modified restaurant. The food is good and nutritious. Those who come also are given opportunities to listen to lectures, the Hope channel, and Bible studies. We have eaten two meals and have noticed several people from the city that have come to eat. I conversed with a lawyer who stated that his relatives are Adventist and that though he is not, he appreciates what we are doing. I invited him to the meetings and he said he would come. I understand that our program has been seen here in Addis for two years now. Those who get the satellite are able to view. Many of the brethren have already stated that they appreciate the Windows of Hope program and watch regularly.
Tonight (Thursday) we have an orientation meeting at the church for our meetings. We will spend time sharing our program, expectations, and have time prayer and testimony.
Pray for these meetings as we seek to minister to the 4 and a half million people of this sprawling city.
Blessings to all,
Bill & Team
