Somewhere in her mid-twenties, she was no older than I. The pastor’s wife had introduced her to me, so I could hear her story. Sarasu (not her real name) was a peaceful and happy woman, someone that God was obviously using. But her journey with God hasn’t always been comfortable.
Born in Tamil Nadu, India, Sarasu became acquainted with Christianity while attending a Christian school. In India, many Hindu and Muslim children attend Christian schools because they receive a better-quality education, and Sarasu was no different. She attended Christian school during middle school and high school. In 10th grade she gave her heart to God and secretly became a Christian. For the next couple of years she kept her new faith hidden from her family, in fear of what they would do.
After graduating from high school, she told her family of her decision to follow Jesus. They became enraged and threatened violence if she didn’t turn back to her family’s religious beliefs. But through faith in God, she was baptized.
Satan wouldn't let go. Just three days before I met Sarasu, her mother became possessed by an evil spirit. Sarasu’s mother began screaming in an inhuman voice that Sarasu was the devil and should therefore leave the house.
Now it was Sabbath and Sarasu stood in front of me filled with concern, but also with holy peace. Sarasu finished talking, and I didn’t know what to say. My life had had its challenges, but I am so blessed in comparison. I did learn, though, of the power of God’s love for His children, and how He longingly pursues us, to claim us as his own. |
